Ingeniously-modded Ford F-150 Helps Stamp Out Hunger

Ford F-150

Apparently, there’s nothing the F-150 can’t do, including growing and then delivering food (and valuable education) to Detroit-area youth.

No vehicle on the planet is more useful than the Ford F-150. We’ve seen these trucks haul insanely heavy loads, pull massive trailers, and traverse even the toughest terrain. On the inside, you’re coddled with the comfort of a luxury car and the space of a van or SUV. You’re surrounded by the very latest in technology and innovation, too. So what else could the Ford F-150 possibly do, you ask? Well, how about using one as a mobile farm?

It might sound strange, but that’s exactly what Ford is doing right now in Detroit. They’ve transformed the bed area of one special F-150 with a mini greenhouse, capable of growing healthy fruits and vegetables year round. The idea came from Ford’s “Thirty Under 30 team,” a group of young people challenged with helping expand the company’s mobile food program. Since 2008, Ford Mobile Food Pantries has distributed food to hungry Detroit-area residents in need.

The new “Mobile Farm” Ford F-150 is an innovative new way to expand that program. Not only will the truck help deliver food to needy folks, but it’ll serve as an educational tool as well. This spring, the specially outfitted truck will visit Detroit-area schools. Students will get a chance to learn about growing vegetables from seeds, nurturing plants, harvesting food, and proper nutrition. They’ll even get to plant and harvest vegetables as well as taste them. In total, Ford expects to reach 2,250 students with the Mobile Farm F-150’s visits.

So yes, it appears that the Ford F-150 truly can do it all. Including, apparently, tackle world hunger and our nation’s obesity epidemic. It’s a small step in the right direction, but Ford deserves major props for thinking outside of the box and helping local communities!
