Aluminum this… Aluminum that… Every time someone brings up the 2015 F-150, it’s like aluminum is the only topic worth getting excited about. Obviously it’s a huge deal, but aluminum isn’t even the most interesting material in the truck. That distinction goes to the unique, organic plastic that Ford will introduce in the 2015 F-150. It’s special because it’s made out of tomato fibers.

In fact, Ford has enlisted the aid of tomato experts, Heinz, in their quest to develop a 100% plant based plastic. The report says that they’re using tomato skins specifically, but that could expand to peels, stems, seeds, and the rest of it. Nike, Coca-Cola, and Procter & Gamble are also getting in on the ground floor with this.

Ford’ll be using the material for wiring brackets and maybe a storage bin. Considering how much of an old car gets thrown away, it’s probably a good idea that some parts do degrade over time. In the future, Ford will probably use more of this material in both their cars and trucks going forward.

Let’s just hope they don’t expand into ketchup based coolant.
