F-150 Versus Ram 1500 in Stock V8 Duel

By -

Ford F-150 with the smaller engine and less torque beats the crosstown rival in back-to-back runs.

The Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500 are the two bestselling half-ton trucks in America while having similar specifications and similar capabilities. Although most full-sized truck buyers aren’t all that worried about all-out speed, some Ford fans do buy their truck to go to the drag strip. If you are one of those people and you have been wondering whether or not your new F-150 will beat a brand new Ram pickup this video from the Kunes Country TV YouTube channel will come in handy with help from the Kunes Auto Group.

The Challengers

This video is part of the channel’s “prize fight” series, showcasing a 2018 Ford F-150 taking on a 2019 Ram 1500 in a pair of heads-up drag races. Each truck has the largest cab configuration, four-wheel-drive and a V8 engine. This means that the F-150 is powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote that delivers 395 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque while the Ram is packing a 5.7-liter Hemi that offers 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

So the Ram has a small advantage in torque, but the aluminum-bodied Ford has a weight advantage and, more importantly, the F-150 has the 10-speed automatic transmission. The Ram 1500 has an 8-speed transmission, but the Ford has the advantage in transmission gearing as well as weight and it seems as though those two factors play a big role in overcoming the Ram’s torque advantage.

F-150 Versus Ram

In the video above, we watch as the 2018 F-150 and the 2019 Ram 1500 race from a dig twice. In the first race, the Ram hops out to a small early lead, but it doesn’t take long for the Ford to catch, pass and take the win. On the top end of the impromptu track, the Ram appears to be at the rear tire of the Ford.

On the second run, the drivers switch and this time, the Ford appears to get the early lead. From there, the F-150 slowly inches away, eventually beating the Hemi-powered pickup by more than a length.

This pair of races leaves no question that this Ford F-150 is quicker in a short drag race than the new 2019 Ram 1500 when both trucks have their optional V8 engines. Crank up your speakers and enjoy!

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
