Oh, Canada! F-150 Tests Line Lock While Flying Canadian Flag

By -

F-150 combines V8 power and a bit of drag racing technology to roast the rear tires.

A great many of the Ford F-150 pickups that we feature racing, doing burnouts or playing in the mud are located in the United States because the F-Series pickup is the best-selling vehicle in the local market, meaning that most F-150s are located somewhere in the United States. The second-biggest market for the half-ton Ford truck is Canada and in the video above from the YouTube channel of Devan Thompson, some of our neighbors to the north are using a V8-powered pickup with line lock to put on a stellar smoke show.

So, we don’t actually know for sure that this Ford F-150 is located in Canada, but it has a hockey stick tucked into one of the bed tie down points with a Canadian flag flying over the cab. If nothing else, we would guess that the owner, driver or occupants of this half-ton pickup are Canadian, but in any case, they are proudly showing off some Canadian pride. And when you can count Rush, Triumph and Neil Young as just a handful of famous exports, there’s obviously a lot to be proud of.

As for the truck, it is from the 12th generation, which ran from 2009 through 2014, and based on the sound, it is clearly powered by a V8 engine. The 5.0-liter Coyote was the only V8 offered during that era and while it was loud, it wasn’t as loud as this F-150, so we are guessing that it has an aftermarket exhaust setup.

More importantly, we know that this F-150 has line lock, which is a system used by drag racers to keep the vehicle in place during burnouts, and to prepare for the tire slaying action, the owner of this Ford truck has swapped-on some old tires on stock wheels.

Stationary Burnout

The video begins with the silver Ford F-150 attempting to do a burnout, but the front wheels roll and the rear tires barely spin, making it clear that line lock was not used at first. Perhaps the driver is trying to do a “before and after” video, or maybe he didn’t use the system correctly, but in any case, the first burnout was crummy.

Fortunately, on the second attempt, the line lock system must have been properly engaged, holding the front wheels locked while the V8 roasts the rear tires. The F-150 smokes the tires in place for better than 20 seconds before the driver lets the truck inch forward, but the burnout fun continues as the truck picks up speed.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
