F-150 with Twin-Turbo Coyote V8 is a 10-second Truck

Ohio shop adds a twin-turbo setup and boost to create a Ford F-150 FX4 that can outrun a 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500.

A vehicle’s quarter mile time isn’t the end-all-be-all measure of its performance, but it’s still a widely used way of getting an idea of how quick a performance machine is. When Ford was building up excitement over the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, it said it was going to be capable of completing the quarter mile in under 11 seconds. According to Motor 1, that time is actually 10.7 seconds. Achieving a time that low is no easy feat, but it helps when you start with a low-slung, aerodynamic sports car with a quick-shifting dual-clutch gearbox. But what if you’re trying to do the same with a two-door pickup truck? Here’s a tip: Start off by stuffing a twin-turbo Coyote V8 under its hood.

That’s what the crew at On 3 Performance, a tuning shop based in Westerville, Ohio, did in their pursuit of increasingly lower times at the Marion County Raceway in La Rue, Ohio. A man who goes by the name Martin, the host of the YouTube channel Drag Racing and Car Stuff, caught up with the owner of On 3, Chad Roberts, and his company’s ferocious F-Series.

It’s a blue single-cab F-150 XL with a short bed and the FX4 off-road suspension package. If you were to see a truck matching that description on the street, you’d think nothing of it.

But the wheels and tires on On 3’s truck are a dead giveaway that it’s not a regular F-150. That becomes crystal clear when you look under the hood. Martin asks Roberts, “What all’s done to this thing?” If you have even the most rudimentary knowledge of modified vehicles, you know the answer to that question is going to have multiple parts. Roberts’s response is no exception.

He tells Martin, “Stock [Coyote V8] engine, stock trans right now. ’18 Mustang intake manifold. Has the On 3 production twin[-turbo] kit.” That includes “67[-millimeter] billet ball bearing turbos.” Other performance upgrades include an E85 conversion and a modified fuel system.

Those parts pack one hell of a punch. They keeping knock chunks off of the F-150’s times. At the end of the first run, On 3’s truck clocks a 10.51-second quarter mile at 134.79 mph. The time stays roughly the same while the trap speed goes down to 133.98 mph the second time through. Roberts wants to nail down a 10.4 with his third blast down the strip, but he doesn’t – he gets an even better time of 10.37 seconds at 135.10 mph. His numbers at the end of his fourth trip down the 1,320-foot testing ground don’t change much. For his fifth and final run, Roberts decides to crank up the twin-turbo boost. Despite the fact that the F-150’s rear tires aren’t the width of a Honda Civic, they still manage to put down the extra oomph effectively. That hardworking rubber and the additional PSI help On 3’s F-150 absolutely fly through the quarter mile in 10.25 seconds at 138.04 mph.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
