F-150 with Original EcoBoost V6 Still Going Strong After 239K Miles

By -

With just regular oil and filter changes and some minor work, this 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is well on its way to the 250,000-mile mark.

When Ford decided to offer the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the 2011 F-150, it took a big risk. Truck buyers were used to naturally aspirated V6s and V8s, but not a six-banger with a pair of turbos attached to it. Would it last, esepcially when subjected to years of hauling and towing heavy loads? As far as the EcoBoost in this 2011 F-150 XLT 4X4 goes, the answer to that question is not just “Yes,” but “Hell yes!”

The YouTube channel Daniel Jaeger Films shot a video about this exact truck back in 2016, when it had 200,000 miles on it. It belongs to one of Jaeger’s friends who works in construction and pulls a 16-foot box trailer to job sites. Given its job description, it obviously has not led an easy life.

Mother Nature has been hard on it, too. A deer hit the front end, cracking the grille and throwing one of the headlights and the front bumper out of whack. The windshield got cracked by a hawk that flew a little too close to the ground – and way too close to the F-150.

As of this video, Jaeger’s friend has had those cosmetic issues fixed. His pickup has a fresh windshield and a shiny new grille, although the body has the nicks and scrapes you’d expect it to have after nearly a decade of hard work.

Most importantly, the mileage has shot up to more than 239,000 miles. Jaeger hasn’t had to do much to the F-150 to keep it and his pal on the road. “We’ve done ignition coils once, spark plugs twice. We’ve done oxygen sensors and we’ve made a little modification to the intercooler to take care of that misfire issue from condensation building up.” The rest has been mainly a matter of regular fluid swaps and filter replacements. Jaeger says his buddy “does his oil changes every 5,000 miles. He uses none other than Ford Motorcraft filters and 5W-30 synthetic-blend oil. And this truck is still running perfect.”

It’s the same story underneath the F-150. It’s dirty and dull, but bone-dry. Jaeger says, “We’re almost to a quarter million miles and still no leaks. Absolutely awesome.”

What’s even cooler is the fact that Jager shot this video last October. That means that the EcoBoost V6 in this F-150 has probably gone well past the point of 250,000 miles and continued to prove that just because something hasn’t been done before, it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be attempted at all.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
