2017 Ford F-150 Recall

Cold Temperature Start Ups May Cause Power Loss to Instrument Panel

Ford has issued a 2017 F-150 recall covering a total of approximately 8,000 trucks. The recall is specific to F-150s equipped with the eight-inch productivity screen. Ford discovered that following cold temperature start ups, the instrument cluster may lose power. Gauges, including the transmission gear position indicator, fail to light up in some instances.

The transmission gear position indicator represents a particular problem because it causes the truck to fail Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard No. 102. It may increase the probability of a crash or injury if the driver selects the wrong gear. An instrument panel failure could also prevent warning chimes and lights, as well as messages, from activating.

To fix the issue, dealers have to perform a simple reprogramming of the instrument cluster display. Ford isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the defect.

Trucks affected by the issue were produced at both the Dearborn and Kansas City assembly plants between Oct. 4, 2016 and Nov. 23, 2016. The recall covers a total of 7,974 vehicles – 6,792 of them sold in the United States. There are 1,057 of the remaining trucks in Canada and 125 in Mexico.

Ford’s reference number is 17C01, and customers can contact customer service by calling (866) 436-7332. The Blue Oval reports that dealers will inspect and repair left-hand body apron joints as required at no cost to the customer.
