i bet those *were* professional-grade tires back in the day. they look similar to mud tires from a long time ago. and professional baja-grade tires aren't mainstream. The tread looks like old "technology".

M/T Baja Kings...

The Baja King, in 36" diameter only, was the hot bias ply desert tire in the 70's and 80's.

M/T reintroduced them in ~2000 for a limited run (new old stock?), and I saw them on a '98 Ford Expedition in Reno around that same time. It was a brand new tire, and looked great on that truck/SUV.

I called M/T Tires shortly thereafter, and the sales/marketing guy told me that the tires were hard to manufacture in a perfectly round shape (were tough to balance,) so they were discontinuing them permanently.

Here is an example of one of M/T's adverts circa 1999 (?)...

...and an article in Four Wheeler, May of 1976, on a Vic Hickey prepped Chevy K-10/15 4x4 step-side that featured Baja Kings on steel spoke wheels...

Wish M/T (Cooper Tires) would bring them back in a 33"/35" tall radial version!

Thanks. Been lurking for awhile. Decided to write M/T (Cooper) again and see what they say...

Here is the response from Bill O'Roake, Marketing Manager for M/T Tires...
Brad,

Thank you for your continued interest in our products, there is no doubt
that the "Baja King" was an innovative tire in its time and we sold many
of those tires in the 70's & 80's as you mentioned.

We had a lot of pressure to bring the tire back and we did.

We reintroduced the tire again in the late 90's and although the
technology had improved and the product was a better product than
previously it just never caught on and regained anything close to what
it had been in the past.

Therefore at that time the product was once again discontinued and we
moved on. The current line up of 4x4 and Light Truck tires we
manufacture is possible due to the development of those products like
the "Baja King" in those early years.

Please visit our website for the current line up I'm sure you will find
something that will suit you needs.
