Question for Kingfish...

I just got Toyo Open Country AT's, 285/75/17's... I'm not sure on the load range, but I'd guess probably 'E'. Max pressure on the sidewall is 65psi. The shop put 38 in them and said thats all I need unless I put a large load in the bed... Doesn't sound right to me... What's your recomendation?

I've always had good luck with 40 psi in truck tires for daily driving.

I run 50 normally, but I haul stuff quite a bit. 38-40 is probably fine, best thing to do is check the contact pattern - wear is the biggest question with tire pressure.

Took a look at the Toyo site. Only see 285/70R17 listed in 17" rims. Those show a LR that would make it around a LR E, 3105lbs, they didn't list it specifically. I would run those no lower than about 44. As the max is 65, 50 might be a little high, but not by much if any. That is what I would use if it was a LR E with 80psi max. As for 38n would be okay without a load, maybe, although I still think it is low for a LR E. As far as running it lower, I certainly am not going to remember or want to put air in every time I carry something. Try the 50 and see how it wears and rides. I doubt with that you will have to ever add when carrying or towing anything, and it should ride just fine unloaded.

Edit - Let us know how it does and what pressure you decide to go with. All the experience I have with LR E tires is with those that max at 80. Those work well at 50 on an F150.

I was wrong... They are load range 'D', and are 285/70/17's...

Think I need more sleep or ....

The shop had them at 34, but I bumped them up to 45, and the ride feels a little better... I'll keep this updated with how they wear at that psi...

Thanks for all your inputs....

34 was awful low. Ford recommends my LR C be at 40. Did you happen to have P series on there OE. If so they probably followed the door. Not the best thing to do when you change load ranges.
