rim width limits

Hi I have a 1997 f150 ext cab 4x4 with a 5.5" lift, and the current rim width is 7". I just bought a set of 35"x12.5x16 mud terrains and i want to buy some 10" wide rims but i heard that an f-150 can only fit 8" inch wide max. I was just wondering if that is a rumour or if there is a rhyme and reason on why 8" wide is as wide asa i can go.In the future i would like 35"x14.5x16 if anyone knows if these will fit please let me know thank you.

First I've heard of that. I've been running 16x10's since 2001.
