Question Searched for someone to answer, but have had NO success. Someone please help me!!

I've searched for someone with this same scenerio, but to no luck.

I have a 2003 F150 reg cab step side. Now it's the 4.6L and i have the FX4 package with the 17 inch wheels.

Now i work here at the BFG tire plant here in Tuscaloosa, AL, and have asked around everyone that works here but gotten MANY DIFFERENT responses.

I recently ditched the 265 goodyears that were stock and put on a set of 285/70R/17's Mud Terrain's on. Now they fit just fine here at stock height and don't rub even in a bind. My question is can i fit a set of 315/70R/17 Mud Terrains under there with ONLY a leveling kit? I ONLY wanna havta use a leveling kit for $160 versus a $1000 lift kit. And maybe just a homemade block for the back. I don't wanna spend some $1000 on a 2" lift kit.

ANYONE please help. All help GREATLY appreciated :-)

Some people have 315/70R17 stock rims on a stock FX4 with the torsion bar cranked up and some of the front fender trimmed back. Expect odd behavior from the transmission and a total loss of power unless you change your rear differential gears.

Yes, you can fit 315/70-17's if you mount them on the OEM 17x7.5 inch wheels.

If he doesn't want to drop a grand on a lift kit he probably doesn't want to spend as much on gears. Besides it won't be a 'total loss' of power. He'll just have to get used to getting the bird flipped by the faster traffic stuck behind him, such as a nun on a bicycle.

What gear ratio do you have? I had 315s with the stock 3.55 gears for awhile. Under light to moderate throttle, it would be OK, although the torque converter would stay unlocked for alot longer = bad for your tranny. Plus cruising on the highway was more difficult because it didn't have any getup. If you have a manual, say goodbye to 5th gear.

If you have anything less than 3.73s, you'll be lugging the hell out of your truck. I would personally stick with the 285s. Not to mention that a 7.5" wheel is too narrow for a 12.50 tire.
