5.4 vs 6.8

I believe the 4x4's come with 3.55 as std. equiptment towing 6000# I would go for the 3.73's especially if you get the 4.6. If you plan on putting taller tires on go for 4.10's. I put tires 1.5" taller than stock and mine kind of lugs in overdrive unless I get up to 75mph or better. I'm sure other members will chime in on this tune also.

You're looking at a truck that will weigh in at around 6500 pounds. I would pass on the 5.4L with the 3.73 gears. The 4.10 gear would be a better choice. If you were to go the V10 route, the 3.73 gears would be OK. If you plan on adding larger tires then opt for the 4.30's. The mpg difference between the 5.4L/4.10 vrs the 6.8L/3.73 is maybe 1 mpg. Either way towing 6k your mpg will suck. Limited slip shouldn't cost you mpg. For the best performance get the V10 and 4.30 gears. If you want 3.73 and limited slip but Ford doesn't offer it then look to the aftermarket for a locker. ( http://www.powertrax.com/index.html )

a truck out of state (MT.) so I can get the 4.10 with LS and also there is no sales tax in MT. That's worth about $2,500.00

Like V10 Man said, that's a pretty heavy truck. You'll definitely want the 4.10 gears if you get the 5.4L engine. With the 3.73 gears, the GCWR is only 13,500 lbs and the max tow rating is 7100 lbs. Not much margin of safety for those few times the trailer might be a little heavier than 6k.
As for resale, bigger engines always bring more money. You'll probably recoup a substantial amount of the initial cost of the "upgrade". which is about $600 for the V10.

You may want to check on the "legality" of purchasing vehicles out-of-state since CA has such strict laws. Despite their "exempt" EPA status, there is a CA-emissions version of each Super Duty engine.
Also, in OK, we have to pay our home state's taxes regardless of where the truck was purchased. This is because some of our neighboring states are like MT and have no "sales" tax. I'm sure that if a bunch of OK politicians can figure this out, the the well-educated people of CA have done the same. Just some things to check on so that you don't get surprised later on.
