Question Oil Pump 5.4 3v

So I'm getting the usual Phaser tick and at 140k I figure if I'm doing Phasers might as well change out timing components. My question is since I'm going in that far I want to change out oil pump also, will I have to drop the pan to change oil pump out? I hear dropping the pan on the 4x4 is a real PIA because of the front axles?

Yes, I believe so - and further think it would be unwise not to do so even if we could. I'm facing the same chore the next couple of months, and plan to drop pan / clean everything and replace the oil pump. Mine's just easier being a 2WD.

But - do you have codes indicating timing trouble? I've had Phaser noise and tick (which I think is from different source) for its whole 210k mile life. I've resisted going after the noise because so many who have reported that replacing everything really didn't completely get rid of the signature noises the 5.4 makes. Mine has only recently developed a persistent annoying P0022 code under predictable conditions. So I think I better do something pretty soon.

F150Torqued... Yes I did have P0022 code before. Changed VCTs to get rid of that. No codes now just tick.
