Test it with a "noid" light. They sell them everywhere $5 I think . There for testing injector pulses.

I think you have a wiring issue and your coils aren't receriving the full signal from the PCM - bare wire - shorting..

Keep plugging away , you'll find it -

Well, I took it to the shop and the mechanic did a compression test on #1 and it had no compression. He said most likely it was a burnt valve due to the fact it was not smoking.

The mechanic advised against doing a valve job because with the amount of miles (156,000) the bottom half of the engine would probably not last very long with the stronger upper engine. He suggested I get a used engine from salvage yard (estimate 2,800.00 to 4,000.00)

I am trying to get 2 more years out of my truck before I can afford to purchase a newer truck. Should I risk going the valve job route which I hope will be considerbly cheaper, or go with the engine change which is way more than I am wanting to spend.

Any idea what a Valve job for both heads would run?

Thanks for all of the help.

I know what it feels like.
I would at least investigate getting another lower mileage motor.
The cost of a motor should not be that great now that these motors have been around for some time .
The labor eats up a good chunk of the total job cost.
Otherwise, to pull the heads, you may end up with more expense if the exhaust manifold studs break, the EGR tube and nut is rusted beyond reuse, so expect there could be additional expense for all this as well as a gasket set and valve job plus valve.
When trade in time comes, the truck's worth is anybodys guess unless going for new or sell it outright.

Hint on getting hold of the original problem; a vacuum gage attached to the intake manifold would have shown up the bad cylinder as long as the gage action is interpeted correctly.

Good luck.

Thats a little above my skill level.

I took to another shop and they found a motor out of a 99 that had 100,000 miles on it and they are going to put it in for $2800.00 total. (motor/labor)

I am trying to get 30,000 more miles out of my truck and hopefully this should get me there.

Will update when they get it done next week.

Update,

I got my truck back Friday and it runs great. The original motor was damaged when the salvage yard took it out of the wrecked vehicle (used a forklift) so my mechanic found another one with 77,000 miles.

The total cost was $2852.00 and that included a few extras like flushing coolant system and servicing the air conditioner.

I think I got a good deal and this should last me for the 2 more years I hope to get out of it.

Thanks for all of your help and advise.

Take care

Rockauto.com sells Motorcrafts - as does any Ford dealer.

Another update, also had the o2 sensor changed but the check engine light will not go out, keeps showing some kind of problem like it is not sensing the sensor. The garage that replaced engine said that the PCM had to be reprogramed by the Ford dealership. This was the TSB 97-26-19 he gave me:

HESITATION/SURGE - MIL ILLUMINATED - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P0133, P0135, P0141, P0153, P0155, P0161, P1130, P1131, P1132, P1137, P1138, P1150, P1151, P1152, P1157, P1158 STORED IN MEMORY - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 11/97
• MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) - MIL ILLUMINATED - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P0133, P0135, P0141, P0153, P0155, P0161, P1130, P1131, P1132, P1137, P1138, P1150, P1151, P1152, P1157, P1158 STORED - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 11/97
• ROUGH IDLE - MIL ILLUMINATED - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P0133, P0135, P0141, P0153, P0155, P0161, P1130, P1131, P1132, P1137, P1138, P1150, P1151, P1152, P1157, P1158 STORED IN MEMORY - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 11/97
• STALL - LOW SPEEDS AND OR IDLE - MIL ILLUMINATED - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P0133, P0135, P0141, P0153, P0155, P0161, P1130, P1131, P1132, P1137, P1138, P1150, P1151, P1152, P1157, P1158 IN MEMORY - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 11/97
• LAMP - MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ILLUMINATED - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P0133, P0135, P0141, P0153, P0155, P0161, P1130, P1131, P1132, P1137, P1138, P1150, P1151, P1152, P1157, P1158 STORED - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 11/97

My truck is hesitating at start up and I also noteced the RPM's seem to be higher than before. Could the RPM thing be the transmission slipping.

Does anybody know if there is a charge at the Ford Dealer to reprogram the PCM? Do you know what the charger would be?

Thanks for any thoughts.

What codes are you seeing now?
Of course the dealer charges for their service.
About $80 +/-.
Your grabbing at straws now.
Service for the codes set.

WOW!! Yup , Sounds like there right. Not sure how long that takes - let us know , I 'm curious .. I wouldn't think it wouldn't be more then an hour.

They must not of had the comp from the doner.

Post back with the results ..

Good luck
