4.6 how much oil does it hold

i know this is a dumb question, but i haven't had my truck very long and i am going to change the oil in it this weekend. so of course i want to make sure that i have enough oil to do the job. So how much oil does a 97 4.6 hold?

Hey, thanks i don't have a owners manual with mine but i put in six just like you said the manual stated. But like i said before i haven't had the truck very long and i don't know it very well at all yet. i checked the air filter also yesterday a noticed that it has a drop in K&N finlter. now i know that these filters can be cleaned, but this one is so dirty it is black. if it is black like mine is, can it be clean and still be effective or should i just replace it?

my 4.6 manual says six quarts too, but when i did my oil for the first time (i use k&n filters) i had to use 6.5 qts. i guess the manual doesnt account for what the filter holds.

CB662, as for your air filter...DONT REPLACE IT!!! k&n filters are good for life! just pull it out, wash it with hot soapy water, let it dry and re-oil it (dont use too much oil tho cuz youll foul your MAF wires).

hope this helps.

You should actually go buy the service kit for the K&N. It comes with cleaner and oil. Instructions for use are on the K&N website. I think it's about 10 bucks and it will clean and reoil several filters.

6.0 qts. There were some issues with the 97 and 98 dipsticks not being accurately marked. Change the oil and filter, fill it with 6 quarts, start it for a minute, let it drain for a few minutes, and then check the level. Wherever the level falls on the stick is the full mark.
