2003 4x4 5.4L Transmission mystery
My 2003 5.4l f150 transmission started whining and then disengaged, no forward or reverse. the mystery is that if i shut it off for 5 min. i can start it and drive about 1/2 mile and then it starts to whine and it disengages.
Fluid level is good and after i had it towed home i was able to start it and drive for about 20 min until the truck came up to temperature.
i have seen some posts that there should be a trans fault light but i get no check engine light or trans fault light.
any ideas before i take to trans shop and end up getting it rebuilt.

yep it is red and smells good.
started it after it sat all night and it drives ok, once the temp rises the transmission starts to whine and no reverse or drive.
need to add that about 3 miles before this started i was backing up and when i put it in drive it made a noise but i drove it and it seemed to be ok for about 3 miles then it started to whine.
i parked it and it would not move, after shutting it off for about 5 min it was able to engage for about a half a mile.
sounds like a pump or torque converter.
