Unhappy No 4wd

My 93 V-8 with AT won't go into 4wd. When I push the 4x4 button on the dash, the alternator guage swings over to "-" for a second and that is it. 4x4 light does not come, truck is not in 4wd, nothing else. The alternator gauge action indcates to me that something electronic is working and something mechanical is not. Any help?

Had the same exact problem on my '93, v8 w/auto. Was the 4 wheel drive shift motor on the back of transfer case. Changed motor, worked like advertised!!!!

It's very common for the shift motor to seize. There are articles on the web showing in GREAT detail how to rebuild them, but it's probably easiest to just buy a reman w/warranty & bolt it on.
