Grinding tranny???

We have a 2002 explorer xlt 4x4 with the v8. Often when idoling of the starting line there is a grind from underneath. Sometimes it seems like its from the front by the transfer case, sometimes from the rear, and sometimes in the middle. The sound is like when you turn real sharp in 4wheel drive but it occurs even going straight. The truck has 20inch rims that are pretty wide and i first thoght the tires were skiping like a positrack because there so wide but again it happens when going straight. Is there any chance these things are kicking in 4wd for some reason? Is the Transmission or rear end known for failing? Thanks
