I just traded in my 99 QuadCab 1500 4X4 for a new 06 Supercrew 2WD. The tranny issue is what drove me to the trade. I thought that only the folks who abused the thing were whining, but it really does have a substandard tranny in it. At just over 102K it started to give up the ship. If you do some looking you'll see that's when most people start having the problems with them.
I really liked the truck and it gave me no other trouble than that, but the cost to R&R the transmission was going to cost just over half as much as the truck was worth.
If your friend gets Ram make sure he can geta good deal on a rebuilt tranny as well.

you had a 5.2 right?? the v6 tranny seems to hold up better. ford trannys seem built pretty good. ive owned 3 chevys those were ok, but they were all cars so never really worked them.i considered buying a ram but then remembered the tranny horror storys. glad i went with the 150.

you really only see tranny problems in the rams. its a heavy truck making a nice bit of power. the tranny just can't handle the load.
