loose shifter- how to remove ignition switch/column cover

95 F150, 5.8, auto trans, column shifter

the shifter is very loose and i want to remove the column cover to tighten it up. cover fits tightly around the ignition switch and i need to remove the switch (or the outer part) to remove the top of the column cover.

what is the correct way to remove the outside of the switch? it tried prying and twisting, but i dont want to bust it.

my alternative is to slit the cover.

thanks,

james

Look thru these photos & their captions. They're from my '94 CV, but it's the same column that's in your truck.

thanks! got it- a release button. i noticed that extra hole in the bottom of the cover but never imagined it would be anything so sophisticated. most of the stuff on fords you just pry or hammer off

On the 98 you have to turn it to the run position then push the release button, before it will slide outa there.
