Converting 2WD to 4WD- what would it take?

The truck is an XLT '06 i have an STX '08.
It has the exact same options, just the XLT has chrome bumpers and grey carpet, i have PTM bumpers and rubber floor.
I do liek the carpet, but i like my PTM bumper.
I have 12,000 miles it has 24,000 i believe.
I'm probably making the trade next week.

this has been an interesting thread to read
seems to me that as long as the vehicle was originally made in both types, that all parts would be available for a swap. especially if you keep the ifs as was from the factory for a 2004-2008 f-150.
the only thing i have read so far that might make it real difficult is that the actual frames themselves and mounting attachment points are welded onto the frame different, and that the front crossframe is different on the 4x4 and the 4x2. can anyone confirm this and maybe go into more detail?
other than that as long as you have all the parts (maybe a donor vehicle) that it would be a bolt in deal. alot of work, yes, of course... but still basically a bolt-on conversion.

Lol holy hell i forgot i was even considering this at one point. Never happened, never traded the truck either. It wasn't worth my time, the truck i was offered to trade was beat to hell. I no longer need the 4WD, I've just gotten used to having people jump in the bed hwen i get stuck. Had to get pulled out in the 2 feet of snow we had a few weeks ago, and that was in a 4WD explorer- so how much help is the 4wd after all? haha!
Good ole 4.6 4wd F150 pulled me out though haha.

Depending on your needs, something like an E locker, air locker on manual locker might do the trick. Most 4x4s are actually 2 WD with one front and one rear turning, unless they have limited slip or lockers. I remeber a test when the Toyota prerunner, w/ e Locker came out. One of the magazines tested it against a yota 4x4 of roaad, and it went everywhere the 4x4 did. Just a thought.

just for info's sake for this thread...
i did some further research, and yes indeed the frames have different part numbers from ford
so there is no way to do a factory-style conversion from 2wd to 4wd, unless the frames themselves are swapped out. (or you are a really really good fabricator lol)
