I think some people don't realize just what exactly they can do to their vehicles with a preditor.

The same as in any of the car ehtusiast forums.

Just because the thing will let you put your air-fuel to 10 and set your timing to 360 dosn't mean your engine can handle it.

A person needs to educate themselves before touching any of the settings on one of these if they're not having it professionally tuned.

Most likely you'll find the ratio of blown engines to stupidity tuning settings pretty high.

Early Feburary sent a rod sailing through the block in my L.

And it's been implied that the predator's agressive standard tune was the reason. Just a note that the actual predator is a great tool and it's the standard tunes that cause the problems.

So add another one to you list...

What other mods were these "boom" engines running? What kinda boost did they have? Anyone know?

This is exactly why I don't have a predator.......... I'm not smart enought to use it.. I have plans to dyno tune my truck and Johnny Lightning will be doing it..............

Now wait a minute. The Predator only allows +/-10%. That's maybe 2 degrees of timing and less than one A/F point.

For a base tune to be that close to the ragged edge is unforgivable. So if anyone is blowing a motor on a as-shipped Predator tune, I have to hold Diablo at least partially responsible. There should be at least a 10% margin of safety built in to the device.

And MANY people have reported masive detonation with the as-shipped tune.

Tim,

I purchased a Predator for *****s and grins. I haven't actually used the tune....I have checked it though on other L's.

The "pulley" tune, as they call it, was set at 17 degrees timing and the A/F was set at 12. From this number it is adjustable to as high as 20 degrees and the A/F can be moved as high as 12.8.

I don't know enough about how these systems are changing the fuel tables to get to in depth about it. But if that 20 degrees was being used on a cold day, say 45 or so....would the computer not try to throw some more timing at it due to cold air?

Rocks

P.S. The standard tune did cause one of our local guys 2004 to detonate like mad. He is using a tune now that PSP set him up with and doing good.

I know nothing about tunes. I am just making a general observation that a product that allows +/- 10% adjustability should not have the base tune anywhere near the ragged edge.

I would be very hesitant to buy any mail-order tune -- chip, reflash, or Predator.

Are the engines that blew using the Diable tunes or a custom tune supplied by a tuner? That would make a big difference!

The tunes from a tuner should be safe, but I know from first hand that the tunes from diable are on the edge, if not over...

Your Buddy SURE AINT NUMBER 1.
Or 5 or 6 for that matter, there are many many post on this issue.

Jim @ JDM gave us an idea one day on how many new built motors he all of a sudden sold when the Predator first came out. And it wasn't 1, 2 or 3 either..... (using the stock Predator tune)

The stock Predator tune is outright deadly, --> TO SOME L's.
Remember we all react diff to the same Mods and Tunes.
Not to mention, weather, altitude, Octane, + Mods of course play a HUGE PART. One thing is for sure, the stock tunes SHOULD NOT BE USED
