You can purchase the Motorcraft filters at Wal-mart for $2.97. I don't know if you can find them much cheaper than that. I think I read somewhere that they were a Purolator filter.

i know i can get a filter cheaper by going to walmart or autozone or checker or NAPA or whatever. a lot of companies make filters the same size and thread. but what i want to know is who makes the OEM filter for ford? the assumption is that the motorcraft filter is the same filter with a different label as one made by somebody? who is that somebody?

Check this page out. Looks like it might be a Purolator product. You decide: http://members.nbci.com/minimopar/oilfilterstudy.html

At any rate, it's a good filter.

Purolator makes them , but the paper media insert( filter paper) is to Ford spec.`s. I emailed them & thats what they told me. I use PureOne which is the best in my book!!!!! Maded by Purolator.
I hope this helps you out.

Lariat 1 is exactly right. I called Purolator also and got the same basic response except that Ford wanted a long lasting fiter, and thus doesn't filter as finely as Premium Plus--let alone pure One.

Funny, this guy:

Found that the Motorcraft was basically a Pure One filter element in a Premium Plus casing.

The motorcraft seems like an exceptional value in light of this.

Just purchased a '01 F-150 V-6. Agree with commentary that Motorcraft FL 400S and Purolator L20195 are same metal stampings with some interior differences. Interestingly, the OEM original filter that comes on a new truck does not appear to compare to either of these. It is all white with just a Ford UPC number on it. One of the holes surrounding the threaded hole is biggerthan the others?
