Towing question - need quick info
My truck = 1990 F150, 5.0, AOD (165k mi), 3.55 gears
My brother lives in Fla, and is in need of trailering his (wife's) two horses out, for obvious reasons. He called last night and asked if I could do it with my truck - driving down there from SC, and pulling them back up here. I told him that I would be willing, but I don't know if I could do it with my truck. I've never pulled anything larger than a U-haul trailer or pop-up camper with my truck, which only has a bumper hitch.
I'm thinking that I have to tell him no. What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Wade

First you don't mention the weight of the horses or what type of trailer he has for them. But either way it really doesn't matter. DO NOT try to pull horses with a bumper hitch!! Your bumper is not designed for that kind of weight. More likely than not you will need a brake controler due to the weight of the horses.
As far as being able to pull them, that would be determined by the individual doing the driving but I wouldn't advise pulling that much weight behind a 302.

Go to U-haul.
Have them put hitch on your truck and give you a receipt.
Go to Florida.
Hand your brother the hitch receipt.
Hook up and get the horses out of there.
It's a hurricane.
It's a one time pull.
I would estimate the load at less than 6,000.
(A good size horse weighs about 1500lbs x 2 + trailer weight)
The truck is 14 years old, what are you saving it for?
