If the starter is staying engaged to the flywheel for a significant amount of time after the truck is started, the starter will probably be fried in a very short amount of time. Sounds like you may have a stuck or sticking starter solenoid.
I really appreciate the info and will replace the solenoid. That was the trick. Gave it a tap and the starter disengaged. On the way to the store right now.
