Great Truck...Horrible Stereo System

What is up with the stock stereo in the Lightning. It seems that Ford has always been the bottom feeder of Stock stereos. So here is my problem. I want to replace the stereo system relatively inexpensive.

Is there anyway to make a CD/TAPE combo unit work in the dash.

If not what is the best cassette, cd controller head unit for the money.

Thanks for any advice.

I can't advise on a good tape unit, but I agree about the stock system in the L being the pits. The stereo in my wifes Focus sounds better, and the Focus cost less than half what the L did.

If you want to do some fabrication, cutting, filing, fitting, etc. you can fit a true Double Din HU in there, and most fo those have CD and tape.

CaptainO,
When you say "modification", are you speaking of the brackets in the dash that hold the factory HU, or do you have to modify the dash also??

If you take out your stock stereo you will notice that it looks like plenty of room for a Double Din, but you will also see a plastic piece that is towards the top. That needs to be trimmed and removed to get a DD to fit in.
