2000 F-150 Bad Computer????
I have a 2000, F-150 with 308K miles on it. (Believe it or not). It is a 2 wheel drive 5.4L engine with 5 speed, great truck, had it since 20K miles. Brought it into Ford for check engine light as my local guy could not fix this. The code said some solenoid valve on the gas system was bad. Ford has come back and told me the computer is bad and has to be replaced and all emissions systems were working fine.
First question was, could I get one out of the salvage yard and have them re-program it. They said no, as all of the data was based on the VIN number and Ford does not recommend doing this and the dealer I don't think will do this.
Ford said 1.5K to replace it. The truck is still running as strong as ever but I cannot justify putting this amount of money into it. Has anyone come across this before and are there any other options I have. The computer did have a firmware upgrade a couple of years back.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Hate to junk this truck based on this.
Thank you,
Carl
