the best programmer
the best programmer
i have a 2006 fx4 and i dont really know too much about the tuners programmers but i want some more power and better mpg and i know this will help now does anyone know which would be the best for pprimarily more power and thhen better mpg and which one is best for the most mpg or just any input yall have? thanks
Most people on the forum have custom tunes from one of the following:
www.troyerperformance.com
www.vmptuning.com
www.powerhungaryperformance.com
I recommend calling each one and find out which is best for you. All three are very good.

ps. do a search and you will see this has been done a million times.

I suggest VMP, that's what I have and the tunes are awesome. They offer both performance and mileage tunes, so you can switch between the two easily when you feel like it. I haven't switched it off of my 91 performance tune yet though
The performance tune is also supposed to get you a little bit better gas mileage if you keep your foot out of it, but not as much as the economy tune which can vary from 1-4MPG gained. Most people report 1-2MPG gains.

The driveability is much better with a custom tune and that is the big reason I bought tunes. MPG gains is a bonus.

To be honest I haven't been able to keep my foot out of it so I wouldn't know. I just told you what I saw on the VMP website.
I have the Edge Evo, and I like it a lot. I plan to upgrade to the Gryphon and get custom tunes.
With the Edge, I have noticed much better response from my truck. It is a lot quicker. As far as MPG, I am getting about 4 MPG more than I did before I added the Edge. It is a combination of the tune, plus being able to monitor my driving "technique." I did not gain 4 MPG just because of the tune.
I want to upgrade to a Gryphon so I can add a CAI and add custom tunes. That might boost my MPG a tad bit more, but the main thing is the performance.

i have VMP, dad has PHP, sister has stock edge
if you want a screen go PHP, if you don't then i would go VMP. i recommend against the edge. my truck stalled out twice on me, almost got t-boned both times.
Pros for gryphon:
screen giving you information
Cons:
not 100% accurate
big screen on dash
pros VMP:
nothing on dash
cheaper
Cons:
dont no any

If you want to save money and improve MPG then you would be better off changing your driving technique and keep your foot out of the pedal as much as possible. You would have to figure in the cost of a tuner to see if you would save money and with gas being cheaper now the return would take longer.Kevin

I wouldn't count on gas staying as cheap as it is now.
I have the same problem!

Yeah the only thing is that the graph probably isn't self updating for current prices. Nor does it know the future of gas prices lol.
Not a mathematician, but I think you could use basic math to figure it out. If gas is half the price right now. Double it for the chart. If you pay $2 a gallon, look at the $4 a gallon. Then cut the savings in half. This should reflect the savings.

Assuming this is right. At $2 a gallon, with a 3mpg increase, after 15,000 miles, you would have savings of $375.
I average a 4 MPG increase. With the same price per gallon at $2, that would be savings of $472.50. That wasn't the case for me though. I was paying over $4 a gallon for most of my programmer ownership. It didn't take long for it to pay for itself.
When I was running the canned tunes from Edge, there was a slightly improved mpg on the 87 towing tune, but there was an 11% increase in mpg with the 93 tune, which offset the extra cost. That was even with me driving more aggressively than with the stock tune. When I got the custom tunes from PHP, I got about the same as with the Edge tunes, but much more performance. Others have gotten better mpg from the PHP tunes, but I can't say I did, but I am totally happy with the performance.

I just installed the Edge Evo in my 2nd F150. Never had a problem with installation or drivability. I had a CAI on my 2006 and had no problems, and my 2007 is stock (for now).
I've run both Level 2 (towing) and Level 3 (performance) and the biggest thing I notice is the DRAMATICALLY better throttle response and WAY firmer shifting. The canned tunes really do allow you to change a bunch of parameters....fuel curve (WOT), timing, shifting, etc. It's really hard to determine MPG increases because it's so much fun mashing on the throttle and slamming gears! The Instant MPG and Average MPG gauges are fun to watch, though, and I'm always trying to get them as high as I can. Right now I'm at 21.8MPG ('07 5.4L Lariat screw).
For me, the Edge does what I want, plus the Edge and Gryphon have the way-cool gauges and display that you can play with. I understand that with a lot of mods, the custom tunes will probably squeeze out the extra power, but the Edge is just so hassle-free....you can get one in a couple days, slap it in, program it in 15 minutes and off you go.

BUT it does give you a pretty good idea, although I would use a 2MPG increase though.
