I've run both Level 2 (towing) and Level 3 (performance) and the biggest thing I notice is the DRAMATICALLY better throttle response and WAY firmer shifting. The canned tunes really do allow you to change a bunch of parameters....fuel curve (WOT), timing, shifting, etc. It's really hard to determine MPG increases because it's so much fun mashing on the throttle and slamming gears! The Instant MPG and Average MPG gauges are fun to watch, though, and I'm always trying to get them as high as I can. Right now I'm at 21.8MPG ('07 5.4L Lariat screw).

For me, the Edge does what I want, plus the Edge and Gryphon have the way-cool gauges and display that you can play with. I understand that with a lot of mods, the custom tunes will probably squeeze out the extra power, but the Edge is just so hassle-free....you can get one in a couple days, slap it in, program it in 15 minutes and off you go.
The Gryphon is the exact same hardware with the same canned tunes, so same hassle free. Except, when you get Bill's custom tunes, it's even more hassle free because he programs in the shifting you want, plus the downshifting he programs is awesome. Also, the 87 Performance tune is even better than the Level 3 in the Edge and doing it on 87 instaed of 91 or 93. It pays for itself.

Without custom tunes, you are not taking full advantage of the CAI.

Before lifting my truck, which is a 5.4 4x4 supercab, it got 20 mpg @ 70mph and 22mpg @ 63mph. This is with Troyer Performance Tuning, K&N intake, and Roush exhaust, 87 performance tune.

Oh yeah, and my A/F ratios were PERFECT without any datalogging = very safe tunes. The wait is worth it to have the best.

Wow 20MPG stock? That's hard to believe...
The increase in MPG seems right, but even in my supercab RWD truck I only got 16MPG at ~70 stock besides a tonneau.

Kevin
exactly what i post when someone posts on which tuner for better mpg,
once a month air pressure checks
no jack rabbit starts
no higher than 65 on highway
will yield a better mpg return for the money-$0 than what you will get for a $400 tuner

that either tells me bill's 87 perf tune is out of this world or there is something wrong with the edge level 3 tune, no way power output,{not including shift characteristics,or part throttle tq} should be better on 87 versus 93-just for one you can't get as much spark advance on 87-like comparing apples to oranges...

The display on the Edge really helps with improving driving technique.

I did not say it was just power ouput. Actually, the power output feels pretty close but the overall permormance is much better, which includes shifting and especially downshifting. My canned tune was very lacking when it came to downshifting, and that can make the power production seem very poor. If you are running along at 50, and need to accelerate rapidly and all you get is a slow glide up the speedometer as opposed to punching it and getting a kick in the britches, it makes a huge difference.

What I was trying to communicate is that with the canned tunes, I had to use the Level 3 with 93 octane to get the performance I wanted and I was able to replace that with Bill's 87 Performance tune and be completely satisfied. I seldom run the 93 Performance tune.

gotcha blue jay, with shifting and part throttle aside, unless it's severely reatarded for 93 octane, power should be stronger on a canned 93 over a custom 87, point i was making-phil

I agree, its a little strange. But for some reason the 2004 truck seem to get much better mileage.

Is that an instant mpg? or average?

Computer MPG displays are known to be off by as much as 4MPG in some cases. The only thing I trust is the good old "fill up n' measure" method.

To answer the previous question, it's average MPG. I've found mine to be off by about 1mpg at times. At other times, it's right on. But, I've never seen anything that high either.

Yup, the computer was off by .1 mpg. When i did the gallons used vs miles traveled on that 299 mile trip, it came out to 19.7mpg. Not too bad.

And yes, it is an average mpg reading.

Sucks now though, with the 35" tires i can never get it above 15.5mpg.
