Question What tranny in '99 4x4?

I cannot tell from the placard in the doorjam which tranny I have. I have had alot of trouble out of it(rebuilt 3 times, replaced once) and called Ford customer Relations today to inquire about ESP or even buy-back-assistance. Anyone know which tranny it has?

Thumbs up

Dig through posts in the last 30 days or so. I've seen it posted a couple of times how to tell from a plate or marking of some sort on the tranny.

I think in 2000 or maybe 2001 all 5.4's started getting matched to 4R100's in the F150's. Your's being 4x4 it may also.

the only f150s that get the 4r100 are the ones equipped with the 7700 lb payload package. the rest get the 4r70w...

another way to tell which tranny you have is to look at the tranny dipstick cap. if it says "mercon v" it is the 4r70w. if is says just "mercon", it is the 4r100.

looks like ford may have changed their options. just built an f150 supercab at kbb.com. and the only way i could specify the 4r100 tranny (code 44e) was to either select the bi-fuel 5.4l or order the 2700 lb payload package with gvwr of 7700 lbs.

Plain ol' 1997 F150 4x4 with only a 6250# GVWR, and I got the "E" code. Stick says "Mercon".
