Question 1998 4.2L Manual Tranny Change Interval

I feel like a real dummy asking this question....

Just today I was having a conversation with my dad and I asked him if he ever changed the tranny fluid in his 98 4.2L manual tranny truck. He got this "deer caught in the headlights look" on his face and said no. My expertise transmissions are limited to the Taurus AX4S and the Ranger AL4D and 4r44e (or whatever the heck it is). I don't even know what the name of the darn tranny in his truck is.

I need to know the following.

1) what kind of fluid to use
2) how do drain the tranny
3) is there a filter in there like an auto?
4) name of tranny

Thanks for any help you can give me. My manual tranny experience is limited to the MTX-II that was found in the tempos (sealed case).

1) Mercon ATF. I switched to Mobil1 synthetic ATF at 22k.
2) The fill plug and drain plug are both on the driver's side of the tranny case. The tranny holds about 3.5 quarts of fluid. The fill plug is about halfway up the side of the tranny.
3) No filter.
4) It thinks it's called a M5OD. It's manufactured by Mazda.
