Dyno today: Stock vs. Modded

Should I be disappointed? I'm not sure how to take it actually. For one, I can look at it that I spent $500 and gained 37 rwhp and 85 rwtq, but then I can look at it and think about how others have gained nearly that amount of hp w/ just a chip.

Here's last years #'s versus todays:

http://www.lightningforums.com/image...ckvsmodded.gif
(if you're running I.E. 6.0 maximize your browser window so you can view w/out it auto-resizing the pic, you may even need to refresh, or just click on the "resizer" on the lower right of the browser window when you hover over the pic w/ your cursor)

BTW, these will be ALL SAE corrected #'s I will be giving. Some of you are giving STD which will inflate your #'s by as much as 20.

Mods currently are:

JL Diablo Chip
JL 5# Lower
K&N

Previous dyno #'s are w/ just a K&N.

I'll post more shortly when I have time to type all of this up.

Thanks for sharing! Don't sell short the fact that it's the total area UNDER the curve that matters. Heck, you've gained more than 80ft-lbs and 50HP below 3500rpm - that's what's exciting to me.

Okay, I'll go a lil more in depth here about this all.

First, I dynoed back in Sept. '01 in basically exact same conditions (so nearly exact that the same correction factor was used, and temp and barometer were w/in 1%), so when you hear me say "stock" you'll at least know this wasn't all done today. Also, every run was done w/in 5 min. of each other so I had not much time for cooldowns between runs. I wanted it hot off the street, not bone cold like on a winter morning (like some of you dynoqueens test).

2nd, I gained 53.04 hp & 79.53 tq at 3500, so that does sound a lil better than just saying I gained only 37 peak rwhp.

3rd, I tested a mod done by my dad Ivan (usahooters). Well, needless to say it didn't work on the dyno. It actually suffered. BUT, I know this mod works because we have backed it up at the track w/ .1 to .2 better (in the 1/8 people). This mod also costs less than $1, but for all practical purposes we call it IvanLightning's FreeMod. Here's 2 pics:

http://www.lightningforums.com/image...ng/filter1.jpg

http://www.lightningforums.com/image...ng/filter2.jpg

Here's the graph so you can compare:

http://www.lightningforums.com/image...sairboxmod.gif

As you can see going back to the stock airbox setup (keep in mind I have a K&N not a factory paper) gave me 2.53 hp and 10.35 tq (btw, I backed these #'s up, AND I did the airbox mod dyno test FIRST, then factory stock setup 2nd). Look at the #'s down low at 3500, though: A gain of 5.97 hp 8.96 tq for the stock airbox setup. The gains were true throughout the rest of the curve, too. Down low it made more than double difference on the hp.

Reason that this freebie mod suffered on the dyno is simple:

Stationary, extremely hot (100 degrees today in the dyno facility), and no moving air. Just so you'll know, it does work when moving. Try it, it takes less than 10 min. to do, and only a couple of minutes to go back to stock (plus the next time you want to switch back to the mod it'll take only a couple of min instead of about 10 since the holes are already drilled for the zip ties).

In case you're wondering how it works, all you do is remove the lower portion of the airbox completely out of the truck, and keep just the upper part (people, Ford designed the top of the airbox plenum like that for a reason so keep it). And, you don't have to worry about sealing issues as the zip ties keep it attached very well. Think of it this way: Those who have actually drilled holes in their airbox really goofed.

That's all for now,

So your L made 334 stock...that seems abit low but within the tolerences I guess.. I personally would have thought you would have had higher numbers with the 5 lber What program JL chip do you have? With that zip tie mod how do you hold up the top half of the airbox with the bottom removed? Does it sort of just hang there? Do you have any pictures of it on your L? Also for what it's worth I made more HP with just a 4 lber and a street program chip from and different tuner I guess just because our L's were bulit on the same day does NOT mean they are equal lol Sorry not intending to make you feel bad..
Also who's your Daddy? hehehe j/k

I may be 'nit-pickin'' but won't the zip-tie 'holes' allow some unfiltered air in?

Dan by looking at the picture it looks like the ties are through the ribbing on the outside of the cover. I just wanted to know if that top part of the box just hangs there without the bottom to support it..

I believe it hangs three...the rubber inlet from the filter to the cold air inlet in the fender should more than support it..along with the inlet side ...

It actually just kindof hangs there. The fender inlet is gone. It's mainly supported by the lower airbox (see for yourself). You can secure the box somewhat if you choose w/ some zip ties, though. Boy can you ever hear the s/c whine coming from the air inlet now!

Here's some pix in case some of you didn't click on the links above:

Take care,

Jeffery, but quite possibly could these be your dyno #'s?

W/ JDM chip:

W/ PSP chip:

Jeff, doesn't this just look odd? See how I'm making quite a bit more power down low than you, but above 4700 you're making more? I think I'm running way fat in the higher rpms while as you can see you're not. Reason I say this is because of looking at your a/f #'s above and then you stating this in an email:

----- Original Message -----
From: "Jeff" <hud@mc.net>

> ratio. I was kind of fat up top. My ratio was not very consistent. I'm not
> sure if all Lightning's are like this or what.
Unfortunately my local dyno's a/f meter is broke, and they don't plan on getting it fixed anytime soon either.

Jeff, your #'s were derived w/ a a PSP chip and a 4# lower, right? Mine w/ a JL Diablo chip and a 5# lower.

What's everyone's take on this?

BfB do you have any more data or info on why your numbers are low? Do you have some timeslips that we can compare because maybe the dyno was not working correctly. If you run good numbers at the track it really does not matter what the dyno says...at least for me.

Jeff, I have often wondered about the setup of our local dyno here in Mobile, AL. Ever since they switched to the newest WinPep and upgraded their systems it seems like the #'s that have been spitting out have either been too low or at times too high (which I contribute to him giving people their #'s in STD and not SAE).

I guess I'll have to go to Pensacola, FL to get some more conclusive figures (hopefully), but as it is right now I feel that my chip is making me too fat up top. Reason I say that is because of the dramatic hp/tq increases downlow compared to yours, yet I lose quite a bit up top versus you, so go figure?

Remember, I did run an 8.486 @ 82.235 w/ a 1.879 '60 ft. in the 1/8 (true 1/8) BONE STOCK off the showroom floor.

I figured that equates into a 13.28 @ 105.26 in the 1/4 approx.

Hardly indicative of low hp #'s, 'eh? I'm going to the track today so I'll post some times then (unfortunately it's a short 1/8, but at least I can compare to dad's truck (usahooters). He's running 12.3's in the 1/4 at about 111, so if I run similar times to him in this short 1/8 then we'll know if it's on par or not.

Here is some more info on my #'s and such. You'll see my truck versus a stock '99, that also gets chipped.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...threadid=75727

Does anyone out there w/ a 4, 5, or 6 pound pulley and just a chip have any breakdown #'s of your dyno runs? I may have to post this in another thread so it'll get noticed.

BfB
