i was thinking about using regular roof racks on the roof of my super cab to put a canoe on, and then just tying ropes to each end and snugging it down by the trailer hitch and front tow hooks. the only thing i'm worried about is that there isn't enough distance between the two racks, so it wouldn't be stable. thoughts?

I think your going to have a floater on your hands if you do that. Ive carried ladders like that... Not fun. I think as far as the roof racks go you might be onto something. I would still fab something that attaches to the rear hitch neck that stands up, has 2 supports going to each bed rail to keep the sway out. That sounds easy to fab and cheap, strong too. If you make the connection at the roof racks stronger, you wont need a tie down going to the front. Be creative, use good materials and come up with an easy affordable nice looking product that is easy to take apart and reassemble. Something like the one bigun showed you with the tacoma. But attach it to the neck of the receiver vs being the receiver itself. That way you can still tow. But then it may need supports going to the bed rails.

And where can you get roof racks for a supercab. I've been curious about a roof rack or cargo rack for my truck.

i have universal roof racks that i used on my old '97 taurus and i'm pretty sure they'll fit on the roof of my truck. they're adjustable in width.

my issue is that i have a bike rack in the hitch receiver and i have an ARE fibreglass tonneau cover on the bed. i need to work around this, otherwise i'll have to hitch on the trailer every time....

So make a sleeved tube that fits between the hitch and reciever, about 2 inches in diameter. And instead of supports going to the bed rails, use a strap system from the top, downward to the outsides of the bumpers. It shouldn't need any front to back support with the sleeve fitting between the hitch and the receiver, plus the front roof rack will hold it all together nice and tight.
Like this, dont laugh either...

I don't think my idea would work for a canoe, but a buddy of mine built a mount that slides into the hitch then it rises up to the bed height and goes into a y. It sticks out about 4 feet from the back of the truck and is perfect for carrying a small john boat.

My dad built a rack for his pickup for my stepmoms kayak. He just used some old rigid copper pipe he had went up over and back down over the bed. Put a pad on the roof, strap it to the tow hooks and the receiver and you're all good!
