Years ago, another knowledgeable member in another forum got the same treatment.
It pissed him off so bad he sat down and deleted every one of his posts, one by one, which must have taken hours.
Whoever was arguing with him won, the other 157,780 of us lost.

CO has probably forgot more then I ever knew about such things and totally has my respect... I've towed a lot of combos with lots of different rigs, but he sees a lot more of the chassis side and sees a lot of different setups from the under side of rigs then I've ever looked at or worked on!

From my point of view, you can tow just about anything with any kind of vehicle.... They will all get you down the road... I can also use a butter knife as a screwdriver and get the same results as using the screwdriver.... Does that make it okay to do that all the time??? Why bother having a nice screwdriver set in the tool box, if a cheap set of butter knives will do???

I've towed way, way overloaded before with only a bolt on bumper hitch.... I've towed overloaded with those old U-Haul strap on bumper hitches before! Was it a good idea?? Not really, but at the time, it was either do it or not get the job done.... Would I do it on a regular basis? No... Would I say it's "safe to do because I've done it"? No....

What we are trying to say here is that there is more to simple "tow rating" numbers then just that figure.... Lots of other variables come into play then just looking at that "tow rating" figure and thinking it must apply no matter what the other ratings say....

That's clear, thanks. I was excited about what I might learn when I first saw the title of this thread. I think it is because I have this crazy idea in the back of my head of retiring, selling my house and buying a larger truck and a 5'er. Then I would tour the country side visiting relatives. I would drive down the most remote roads and visit the most obscure tourist sites. I know my wife would never go for it, but the idea is still there, and I know I have no experience with a 5'er or GN.

 

That's what my co-worker is doing in April, retiring, selling it all and full time RV.

He got a great deal on a 35 ft 5th wheel.
His new Ford came in last week.

He bought a '09 crewcab F-450 diesel dually.
His take was he wanted absolutely no question as to whether he had enough truck.

 

Wow! A Co-worker! I had no idea there was that much money in goat herding. I think I will make a career change, I'm only 66.

 

I may buy two more new F150s by the time I'm 66. Maybe I'll make it one more F150, then an F450. That will give me some time to figure out how I'm going to sneak two rear wheel by my wife.

 

This guys wife said go for it.
She insisted on a white truck so they could add graphics to match those on the RV.
The 5th has three slides, is over 6 tons and has a washer & dryer.

The guy is 63 and he is kind of twinkle toeing around the office now. It is disgusting to see somebody this happy.

 

ive got the b&w turnover ball and i really think you'll be satisfied with it. im not sure how much the 5th wheel attachment costs but another option is to get a gooseneck adapter for the trailer. thats what ive got along with a hitch extender but i am limited on how far i can turn before the hitch will hit the side of the bed, and that would definitely be more of a factor with the flareside bed.
