I am looking at purchasing a 2004 for my 16 year old son. The truck is at a used dealers lot. I was told over the phone it was a 1 owner. It is a XLT automatic with 175K miles on it. The price is around 4600. I will be going to look at it on Monday & wanted to see if someone could give a few things to check on it. Assuming all the maintenance has been done, about how many more miles can I expect to get out of it before the engine/transmission gives out? Thanks.

 

All depends on how hard of life she has had... On the other hand, 4600 doesn't sound like too bad of price. Might try and negotiate as much as possible, just in case you do have to buy a new tranny.

 

One thing I would do is rod the hell of it on a test drive to make sure tranny doesn't slip and that the motor raps up like it should... not cutting out under heavy throttle or at higher rpm range. Look for smoke to confirm rings are good and head gasket still good. The tranny would really be my only concern though.

 

Majority of it is highway miles seems like a good deal to me. With that many miles the price should be negotiable.

 

IMO, price is a little high with that kind of mileage.

I'd look for a truck with less miles and with a V8.

 

Thanks for the info. I offered 4200 over the phone & I was told 4600 was the bottom dollar (priced at 4800). I still have to check it out & see how it looks/runs in person. Yea, I'd prefer the V8, but thought the V6 might help him some with the gas. It will mainly be used for school transportation.

 

my previous truck was a reg cab V6..and honestly best i ever got was around 17-18..granted i didnt drive it nice all the time..but now i have a 04 with the 5.4..and i manage to get 16-17 mostly every tank..thats not hammering on it all the time but still making use of the straight pipes time to time..i would try to find a nice V8 with a little less miles..just my opinion...

 

the 4.2 is a good engine for a 16yr old with gas and the urge to drive it like you stole it in high school.

still gonna maintain that the price is a little high for 175K. the reason they cant go lower is because thats what they paid on it for a trade in. best bet would be to see if you can find another one first before you get it.

That 4.2l with an automatic should last forever.

 

The 4.2 will get about the same mpg as the 4.6.

 

Which gets about the same mileage as the 5.4.

 

Yep, not much separation between them.
