4r70w shift soleniods

Can anyone tell me which shift sol. should be open/closed in each gear. shifts normal up, but not down, and kills engine if you put directly into 2nd gear.
thanks

IIRC
SSa = SS1
SSb = SS2

SS1 on, SS2 off - first gear
SS1 off, SS2 off - 2nd (this is default gear for failure)
SS1 off, SS2 on - 3rd
SS1 on, SS2 on - OD.

hope this helps

Yep, thats all good. I think I may have got it- TCC sol. is bad- I think. there is a hydraulic bypass for the tcc in first gear, which would explains why, from a stop, in d or 1 it is fine, but 2 it kills the engine. The downshifts shutter the truck so badly because the tcc is not disengaging. I could not get a new tcc sol. yesterday, but pulled the pan off anyway, took the sol. out and put 12v on it and it clicked, so I thought maybe it was good. After spraying out the passages in the trans with brake clean I put it all back together, and still the same. Sooo, I will get a new tcc sol. on monday and try again. I think all of wiring is good because I'm not getting any codes. Is there anything I can check while I have the pan off again when I put in the new solenoid? Thanks for all of the help.

odd ball things like this seem to get the usual valve body gasket replaced and the vb retorqued properly, relatively quickly in the diagnostic list too.

check your wiring by the exhaust, common place for problems to arise, usually progresses to the stage your blowing fuses by the time you notice though.

Do you have the torque specs? If it was an open or short wouldn't it throw a code? Thanks

its not just the spec that matters so much on the valve body, its the sequence, its a very fickle installation. think about it, theres hundreds of little vanes with corners and such, any irregularity causes just enough distortion to cause little problems or major problems. i think both chiltons/haynes (crap manuals imho) have the sequence and specs for the VB. cheap books, also check out autozone.com they have a section that has the chiltons/haynes book online which may cover what your looking for.

yeah i suppose your right, it should flag something if that was the case.
