4x4 engage problem. 06 f-150

i've looked around and didn't see anything on the forum that helped me..

2006 F-150 Lariat, electronic 4x4

a couple weeks ago, i had to use it to get out of a snow covered field, it worked just fine.

today, mother nature brought over 6 inches of snow and the roads are rediculous. well, as luck would have it, my 4x4 will not engage. the LED on the dash will not light up when i turn the 4 high switch. when i start the truck, the led lights up for a second then turns off, like the system check.

any ideas before i am forced to take it in to the shop? i really don't want to have to do that if there is another way.

thanks in advance for any help

wow there are a lot of 4x4 problems... tis the season right

i figured out my problem.

the IWE Silenoid was faulty. a quick run to the ford dealership, $28 and 5 minutes later i have 4wd again.

only problem now is my LED indicator still doesn't indicate what drive i'm in... maybe a bad switch? oh well, for now i'm happy. got another 8 inches this morning and it's SLICK!

good luck to all you who are trying to figure your problems out.

I was having the same problem with my 2005 XLT and talked to a friend, who is a mechanic for the Ford garage. He re told me it's a common problem and said to crawl under the truck and hit the transfer case motor (near the rear of the transmission, drivers side, about 2 inches in dia) a couple times with a hammer. Did it and everything was fine. He, likewise, recommended using 4WD monthly to keep the motor from sticking, but they do tend to stick. I used a rubber mallet, but a mammer will do, as long as you don't dent or damage it.
