Question 2003 5.4L 2V Procharger - Best Performance

Hello All!!

This is my first post on F150online.com, first of many I imagine.

I recently had a D1SC Procharger installed in my 2003 F-150 King Ranch SuperCrew with a 5.4L 2V. I purchased the High Output model with the Fuel Pump, the 3 Core Intercooler and the FMU. Before that I installed the JBA Headers, 3" Magnaflo Cat-Back, High Temp Spark Plugs, and the Throttle body spacer.

I ordered in the 90mm MAF from Ford Racing as well as the 42# Ford Racing Injectors as well as A-Pillar Guage set with digital A/F, Fuel Pressure, and the Boost Guages.

I have been getting it tuned in at a local performance shop with the dyno, but my question is...do I need the 42# injectors? My mechanic has reservations on whether they are needed due to the higher pressure from the ATI provided Fuel Pump.

Now don't get me wrong, I have faith in my mechanic and the shop, but I keep reading similar setups utilizing the larger injectors. Will the larger injectors just dump too much fuel in and be a waste of money?

Thanks all,

Mission

First thing to do is take that throttle body spacer OUT! It will hurt your performance with a blower. And they don't do anything anyway!

Your truck will run better and more efficiently by putting in the 42#s and getting rid of the FMU.
If it's tuned properly.

Like phil said ditch the FMU install the 42#ers and 90mm MAF and have teh truck dyno tuned, the ATI boost-a-pump will feed them fine but a 255lph in tank fuel pump is better.

Get the truck dyno tuned without the FMU and consider 12si (a 3.40 head unit pulley)

ALSO help your transmission out somehow, shift kit at the bare minimum

Thank you for the replies,

Why does everyone suggest to ditch the FMU, just for my own knowledge?

What is the rating on the ATI supplied fuel pump, does anyone know?

I figured the spacer was a crock anyways, so I will have it removed.

I will have them install the injectors Monday if they have not already.

It is being dyno tuned with my DiabloSport Predator U7153, so hopefully that will allow all of the necessary adjusments.

I am having them service the transmission as well and have asked about upgrades /kits for it, so I will definitely take care of it.

Thanks,

Mission

the FMu only allows you truck to run the stock injectors by over pressurizing them for more fuel and making your truck miss out on torque down low and makes it run rich on the top end and miss out on power...

plus it's not safe as it's running stock timing

Well, here I am again. I had the 90mm Ford Racing MAF installed (they had to customize the tubing to fit), the A-Pillar with A/F Guage, the Fuel Pressure Guage, and the Boost Guage. They did not install the Ford Racing 42# Injectors. They had to replace the plugs with a step hotter (NGK).

I pulled out of the shop and noticed the CEL on, so I checked the codes and it is throwing the P0174 and P0171 (left and right bank running lean), so I cleared the codes and ran it through the city with no return. I then drove it back across and got to a point where I could open it up again. The CEL came on immediately. I pulled it into a gas station checked and same codes again. I then pulled out the DiabloSport Predator and set the fuel richer two notches at the 3K+ range took it out to open it up again and no CEL.

It is still bogging at certain areas of the shift range including low end and high end. Should I just find another shop and have them install the 42# injectors, remove the FMU and dyno tune it?

The fuel pressure is 30psi at lowend with a -6 boost and raises to 80psi at 14psi boost. The A/F is around 14 - 15 steady.

Anyone in the Calgary area have a shop to recommend?

Desperately seeking power,

Mission

dude don't open your truck up. get the 42#ers installed and a dyno tune before you do some damage, NGK tr6 is a decent plug for up to 12# of boost

on a side note, what rpm do you start seeing boost?

They had it on the Dyno, but it definitley wasn't tuned due to the lean codes. I am looking into another performance shop right now. It starts making boost at around 2500rpm.

also eventually look into getting a new bypass valve the 34mm intended for wrx's work great, my ati bypass was leaking boost and your truck will feel stronger off the line with a better bypass

what are your numbers since they had it on the dyno?

Yeah, the Turbo XS Racing Bypass Valve was suggested to me to give better lowend boost. It does leak off quite a bit right now with the ATI supplied.

I am currently running at roughly 397 HP and roughly 500 ftlbs at the highest, but it is far from flat throughout.

colin started running one and he liked it so I got one and it really really changed the low end power of the truck

you're producing good numbers, the lean part scares me though

Tr6s are good. This is the first time I've heard of going to hotter plugs for a blower???? usually, one step colder........

Well, it didn't start throwing the lean code until the 90mm MAF was installed, so I am sure that has something to do with it. I have the TR7IX Iridium plugs.

I just threw the code again on a short drive, no WOT. Here are my settings in the Predator:

Axle Ratio - 3.73
Fuel Injector - High Slope 19.87, Low Slope 21.60 (This is stock)
Idle RPM - Drive 675, neutral 675
OBDII - No changes
Rev & Speed Limit - Drive 5850, Neutral 5350
Shift Points - 1-2 5350, 2-3 5350, 3-4 5350
Shift Pressure - Global 35 over stock, Part Throttle 1-2 120, 2-3 100, 3-4 100; WOT 1-2 180, 2-3 160, 2-4 140
Spark Advance - No Change
Torque modulation - 1-2 Off, 2-3 Off, 3-4 Off
WOT Fuel - Open Loop 1k-3k -3.50, 3.5k-6k -0.50 (I just changed these on notch richer each due to the codes)

What y'all think?

Thanks,

Mission

If you are not going wot, then adjusting the open loop fuel will not correct the lean condition, as the fuel in closed loop is controlled by the front O2 sensors. If you don't have a wide band O2 sensor, it is hard to tell how bad the lean condition is.

Lean and forced induction are the worst case scenario. Drop an email to Don LaSota and see if he can straighten it out for you with a tune. He responds very quickly.

ONELOWF,

Thanks, that is what I was afraid of. I am staying away from WOT for now. I cannot get in to the other shop until the 11th unless there are cancellations. I am running this wideband right now http://autometer.com/cat_gaugedetail...id=3603&sid=15 and it does not indicate lean operation at all. Perhaps the new Lightning MAF sensor needs to be cleaned?? I looked at Don LaSota's site, but he doesn't offer mailed tunes with the aftermarket products I have unless I do some datalogging. I do not have the data logger for this unit yet.

Thanks,

Jon
