2v pi heads Romeo vs Windsor

Ok my dad has a 1997 F150 4.6L 2V that is a Windsor. We want to do a PI head swap. The local junkyard has a 2001 F150 4.6L 2V Romeo heads and intake. The guy at the junk yard said they will not fit. Is that true? If its not what will it take to make them fit? I thought as long as you had the PI heads and PI intake you are fine.

I'm pretty sure they will fit (you might need the valve covers as well.) The Junk yard dog is prolly thinking about the difference in compression or maybe the difference in pistons between the years - not sure.

Make sure your buying PI heads - 2001 , they should be. Look for "PI" on the heads before you buy them.

Cool

HI!... They will bolt right on to your engine. For it to all work together you need the heads, intake manifold, and valve covers. Just remember that your compression will go to 10.5:1 when you install P.I heads on a non P.I short block. You will need a tune also.

Sounds good. I knew about the compression going up and needing a tune and needing to run 93 octane but was not sure on romeo vs windsor. We are going with comp cams and P&P heads, intake, and TB so we will for sure need a tune.

Slipped my mind about the tune. I heard it will run without one, not that good. Make arrangements with a tuner in your area ahead of time. Those guys can get backed up - so it's a good idea to locate one and see how busy he is - explain what your in the process of doing, ask how soon you could get in once you've completed the install. You might want to discus cost , so you know what your looking at.

It would be cool to visit the tuners shop and talk to them. - Get on the Dyno and just log your current numbers. Then after everything's said and done - You'll see exactly what you gained and where.

Thanks for the tips. Pretty well versed with our local tuners. Running a tune on my 700+rwhp 03 Cobra and also on my wifes lightly modded 03 Mustang GT. Just not to sure on the difference on the 4.6L F-150s. Running SCT XCal II on both mustangs so will most likely go back with that for this F-150. I do all my own work just don't do the tuning.

I figure I will get a base Dyno on the truck then do the mods and then dyno again to see if there are any gains.

I figure you'll see some decent gains. But the 4six spec sheets threw me a little. The spec sheets don't vary that much in numbers from "non-PI" - "PI heads" - On the 5four they do , but not the 4six?

Well, your going to more gains no matter what, since your polishing. Otherwise, I don't know if it would be worth it.

They have a few write-ups on this swap.

Kool thanks. We are just making sure that the heads off the 2001 F150 is truly PI heads. Waiting for the salvage yard to call back and say if they can find the PI on the heads/intake.

HI!... All 5.4's in the F-150's got P.I heads in "99". The F-250 5.4 got P.I heads in "2000". The Mustang 4.6 got P.I heads in "99" as well. The F-150 4.6 didn't get P.I heads until "2001".

Some places I read say that the 2001 F150 4.6L 2V had the PI heads.

That's correct. In 2001, the 4.6L's in the F150's received PI heads. Always make sure before you Purchase tho. Neal has a pic of what it says on the casting. It should say "PI" .

The "PI" designation by ford was on all 99-00 Windsor 4.6L's and 2001+ 4.6L Romeos. I'm almost positive they were on all 2001 triton truck blocks(4.6L's). That's what I recall - 1L2E castings ? - That sounds familiar - I would call who-ever your acquiring the heads from and ask for casting numbers and/or "PI" stamp.

OK I guess I would ask this. I have searched for about 2 hrs on this and have come up with 50 different answers. P&P PI heads, Intake, TB + Comp Cams #102500 (recommend from a guy on here) will I have to run 93 octane? Or with a good tune can I run 87? I have seen many say that with a good tune I can run 87. Only reason I ask is with gas prices going way way up.
