Pics of the 09 6 speed trans dip stick.

Ok so i had some time today so i thought i would put my truck up in the air to let people see how you would check the trans fluid on the 09 6 speed, so first i want to say if you try this this cap sits right beside the pass cat converter so it is hot a ****. you need to check the fluid with trans hot, and you need to have it running when checking it, so you need to open the cap first because it is under pressure, so if you open it when its hot and running it can spray out and can catch FIRE off the cat converter. so i t6ake no responsibility for anything that could happen.

a look at the plug cap you need to take off 19mm wrench needed.

a look at the dip stick in place under the cap.

a look at the cap and dip stick

Interesting. Does the dipstick have mark(s) on the other side indicating operating range or low fluid level?

Deano - thanks for sharing...what ever happened to the simple trans fluid dip stick you could access from under the hood? Seems Ford doesn't really want anyone but the dealer checking the fluid level? Also, hard to read - but does the dip stick say "Remove before use"?

I'll one up you though...neither of my BMW's even have an oil dipstick...you HAVE to rely on the computer to measure the engine oil level....

yes it has a set of X hatch marks near the top of the stick that indicate the full level. and so you know i look through the workshop manual and it says that the trans fluid does not need to be changed for 240,000km or 150,000mi so if there is no leak they you should really never have to check the fluid level. but if you do the new 6 speed does not use mercon 5 trans fluid it uses Mercon LV its a new fluid don't mix them up.

i don't remember what it said sorry.

The "remove stick from car before use" phase concerns me for a couple of reason: 1) Why does it say remove? 2) Car..come on FoMoCo, you know this 6 speed is not going in a car, it's a friggin truck for sakes.

Thanks for the time you've taken to do this.

Not requiring a tranny oil change to 240000 km is a huge deal. This sort of stuff adds up in maintenance costs over the life of the vehicle.

The 4 speed transmissions required fluid change every 30k miles and they weren't cheap to the owner. Now, you can go to 150k miles on the 6 speed transmission without a fluid change.

Actually, service for the 4 speed tranny used in the F150 is supposed to be done at 155K. Severe service applications require changes at around 30K.
