I read with great interest about how long an aod would last.
Now i wonder how long an 4R70W could last under "normal"
conditions. Here in Norway both Ford and GM has a bad reputation for breaking gearboxes.
What do you mean by flushing the tranny? And how?
Maybe just language trouble!

I got 96000 miles out of my old one before it started to act up so i traded it in for a new truck instead of putting alot of money into a trany on a 6 year old truck that had almost 100k on it

I changed the fluid when i bought the car, and i change all fluids at least once a year.
Motor oil every 5k miles.
Next time i will flush it too, even if the oil now looks like i changed it yesterday!

To answer the original question, 5+ years and 101,000 miles and still rolling with never even a hint of a tranny problem.

Transmission fluid has been changed approximately every 30,000 miles as per Owners Manual and Factory Service Manual.

 

Guys, I am at a loss here. Everyone is saying how their transmissions have lasted for 100,000+ miles, and yet I am having my transmission rebuilt as I type this with 155K miles on it. What I did not mention is Ford put a new tranny in at 95K miles under my extended warranty. I will admit I drive the truck hard (have a heavy foot), but I do very little towing with it. I also have a Superchips Microtuner program in the CPU.

Am I wearing these trannys out by my aggressive driving or am I just having bad luck??

My truck is a 2001 SCrew Lariat - I am assuming I have the 4R70W.

 

I think it just depends on the truck, its like an engine, some will last 500,000 miles, another one might blow after 20,000 miles. My tranny was toasted at 105,000 miles and had to be rebuilt, but its been working fine since.

 

How long? According to AAL Transmission World......67k miles.

Just called me and said it needs to be rebuilt. Good thing it's covered by warranty until 88k miles.

 

If that is the case, then I did pretty good with the first one!!

Damn, this was the first auto that I have owned and was looking forward to not replacing clutches anymore, but now clutches are looking pretty cheap!!

 

Another thing that can kill trannies pretty quickly is if you're driving with O/D on in the city and the converter isn't locking up. You can tell this because when you step on the gas, it smoothly revs up instead of having the sharp increase of a shift. Kind of like when you slip a clutch vs shifting gears.

If you see the RPMs floating around without any sharp changes from a shift, then turn O/D off.

when the transmission crapped out on you what exactly did it start doing or not doing?

the tuner can destroy a transmission if you have it set up for harsh shifting at high rpm's. all the tuner does is electronically raise the line pressure in the transmission which will cause seals to blow. with an actual mechanical shift kit you can avoid having this happen, or so i hear.
