What's the proper way to check tranny fluid?

I know that's a stupid question, but I've heard some conflicting ways of going about this. I know the tranny should be hot when you check it, but should the engine be running also? I just changed my tranny fluid yesterday and want to make sure that I have the right amount in it. I took 10.5 quarts out and I've put in 11.5 in, but the fluid still won't register on the dipstick unless the tranny is ice cold.

If you forget, the directions are stamped into the dipstick.

If I remember right, capacity is 14 qts. When I drained the tranny and torque Converter, with out pumping, it took 12 quarts to refill to proper level.

depending on the out side temp. I check my transs fluid when the engine is cold as well as my engine oil. If you were low on fliud to begin with why run your engine?

I prefer to check mine after driving a few miles,5-15. I then leave the engine idling, run it thru all the gears, then check it in park.

Transmissions should be checked with them warm. If you check the transmission cold you will probably overfill it and some of it will come out the vent.

Thanks for all the help. My tranny has the perfect amount of fluid now. I cheked it warm, idling in park.
