Did base model 4x4's ever come with 235/70's?
Just curious, a friend from my wifes' work bought a used 2000 F-150 base model 4x4. It has the 16 inch chrome steel looking sawblades on it, with puny 235/70/16's. He is about to go out and buy some tires, and he's your average bone stock sort of guy. He also tows a light trailer with a Harley inside, the bike, not a truck The tire size should be in the manual or on the door sticker somewhere, right? I'm thinking his speedo may be off? So, did they??,,,,,,98

YES, a 4x4 could come with P235/70R16's. I had them on my 99 XLT 4x4 3.55 (not ORP).
No, the speedo would not be off, the computer is programmed for the tire size in came with, so the speedometer should be within tolerance. Starting in 1999, the speedometer was controled by computer, not a small, swapable gear.
When my Stock tires wore out, I replaced them with Michelin LTX A/T's in LT265/75R16's on the stock 16x7 polished AL wheels. I had the dealer reprogram the computer for the larger tires so the speedometer is accurate. The engine seemed to have more power when programmed to the larger tires too. LT265/75R16 is the same width and diameter as the "off road package" 265/70R17's
My highway gas milage (@ 75mph) increased about 1.5-2.0mpg with the larger diameter tires. I noticed this on the gas gage too on a long trip.
The disadvantage to the larger diameter tires is that the transmission shifts a bit more often and I lost some towing capacity.

The speedo wouldn't be off if it's the factory size, that's a given I just thought someone may have put cheap used tires on the truck before selling it. IE:cheaper=smaller. I had no idea that small a tire was ever considered for a 4x4 model. They came stock on my truck, and they looked like someone swapped tires with a civic,,,,98

Ya i have 245/75/16's on mine and stock is 235/70/16. and it throws off my speedo by about 5mph. I learned this the other day when I got a $75 ticket for doing 67 in a 55. Now when the cop met me on the road I looked down and was I was doing 58, which in his case would mean I am 9mph over, bull****. I have had a couple of friends drive in front of me doing 55 and every time im at 50. I was still speeding so I still get the ticket. But I was wondering how can you reset your speedo. Do i just reset the computer? i.e. disconnecting the negative terminal and turning the headlighs on?

Emissions,
On your 97 you just need to change the little nylon speedo gear at the transmission. The gear should cost about $8 to $10, and its a easy swap. Don't know which one you need though.
99 and newer need the computer reprogrammed at the dealer to calibrate tire size/diameter to the speedometer. This could cost anywhere from $50 to $125.
