where to get a used rim for a spare?
i just posted a recent thread about methods for locking up my spare tire as it was just stolen.
now i am having a hell of a time trying to find a plain steel rim for a new spare. i have tried numerous salvage yards, second hand car parts stores locally and i keep striking out. i got a price from a dealership of 90$ for the rim alone but this sounds absurd to me. i want the cheapest steel rim that i can find. has anyone on these boards had any success using the net to find a rim (new or used) at a better price? any direction would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance |
Try your local tire dealer. Around here they have take-offs from the folks that upgrade their tires/wheels as soon as they drive the new pickup off the lot. Price runs about 2/3 of what the dealer wants for a rim that's brand spankin' new.

I got a used stock Ford 16x7 polished al. matching rim/wheel for my 1999 F150 from...
http://www.rthport.com Including shipping it came to $49.29. The wheel was in like new condition and included the hub/lug nut cover. I am planning on getting larger 265/75R16 tires this spring, and wanted to up the spare size to match. So now with a 5th matching rim, I can do a 5 tire rotation, and my spare size will always match wear with whats running on the truck. I also just got the Ford spare tire lock/key set so my spare would be resistant to theft. |
Try Ebay.....

boy that hurt.
i picked up the rim wednesday for 59.99 from a 'used rim' place. at the time it was the best i could find. never thought to look on ebay. thanks for the response, will keep that in mind for the future. |
Tire shops ebay or junk yards would be all good places to find one.

I have an extra with a new goodyear wrangler tire. I think the size is a 255/70/16 from an expedition. If interested, email me and I will let it go for $40 plus shipping.
