Goodyear RT/S out of round

Happy Holidays to All,

I'm sure this comes as news to noone, nor to me, as I have bought a new F150 roughly every 2 years in the '90's and most have come with these poor excuses for a truck tire.

The story:

Goodyear has checked my OE 265/70/17's and determined that 3 of the 4 are "out of round". They have offered me an attractive (read:absurd) deal (approx. $300 out of my pocket) to buy back all 4 (pro-rated, of course) and give(?) me new ones. IMO, these tires aren't worth the rubber they're stamped out of and are barely adequate for a crash barrier at the local dirt track. And the wet weather traction, arghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!........... Sorry, got off on a rant.

My question:

Has anyone had luck getting Goodyear to give credit towards the purchase of another brand or just buy them back outright? I'm sure I'm not the only one to refuse to be stuck with these things.

Goodyear doesn't make a truck tire that I would own, much less pay for. I have always pulled off the GY's in favor of Michelins and would love to have GY pitch in on the cause this time.

Sorry for the sarcastic post, but I just drove 2200 miles over this past week to visit family for the holidays, and my teeth are still rattling.

Thanks

Clem

As I recall Ford is doing the warranty on tires now. Have you been to your Ford dealer and had them check the tires? If they are indeed out of round then Ford should arrange the replacements.

Those tires are the source of many complaints on this board.

In several walk-arounds of the parking lot at work I've counted 5 different tread configurations for that brand tire.

I have the LT245 series -- and have had an ongoing complaint (31K on them as I type) involving noise, however, they really work well on my truck.

I did note that they wear better if rotated front to back (as opposed to x'd), since they seem to feather-edge in one direction when on the front (braking), and even out when on the back (driving).

In the snow today, I was able to WOT-it in 4WD with quite good traction -- and when it's dry, I cannot light the tires -- even break-torquing it.

I am seriously considering buying something QUIET in spring -- but will likely miss them next winter -- perhaps I'll get a second set of wheels and keep them.

Please post your final decision and rationale.

Happy New Year!

Hello All,

I took the truck to the nearest dealership to me on 1/02 and showed them the documentation that I had from Goodyear stating that my tires were out of round. To my surprise, they gladly agreed to replace them all at no charge the next day. Even more surprising was that I did not buy my truck there! The service dept. at that dealership was totally overhauled recently and have been a pleasure to deal with and I'm guessing that Ford isn't looking for any more tire troubles.
The downside was that I was only offered 4 more of the same tires, but for free, I couldn't turn it down.
I begged and pleaded for Michelins or BF Goodrich's, but to no avail. It wasn't going to happen. My "defective" set had over 18k on 'em and I'm just happy to see them gone. The new set seem OK, but I haven't had a chance to spin them up on the highway yet. My next venture is to attempt to trade them for some real rubber at one of the local tire dealers. I've had some luck with that on previous trucks. Wish me luck!
