Brakes, I'm stupid and confused

I'm having trouble with one of my wheels. I can't figure out what exactly is wrong and then what to do about it. My driver's side rear drum is locking up and dragging going forward. I can go in reverse easily but can't go forward. If I go in reverse for a distance I can eventually go forward. It will eventually be normal or normal as I can tell. I'm completely dumbfounded and not quite sure what to do. It's funny that it only started doing this when it got real cold. HELP

It sounds like the hoses need to replaced. There could be a high water content in the old brake fluid too. So I would flush the system too.

Brakes

Thank you for your input I will take a look at that

I would remove the drum and take a look at the parking brake mechanism.

Will do. My main confusion on my part is that I'm not understanding why it will go backwards and then either not or slowly will go forward and if I go backwards long enough it will eventually go forward with a bit of a struggle then goes back to normal

back off the adjuster a couple clicks and see if you can drive it, that would eliminate the possibility of contaminated fluid. Which at this point i think is kinda unlikely given that boiling/expanding fluid wouldn't matter which direction you were trying to move.

I think you probably have a mechanical failure, like a broken/worn return spring, or a sticking wheel cylinder....

What year is this truck and are the rear brakes drum, or disc with small drum for parking brake? Do you use the parking brake? If you do, sounds like it's sticking, common in cold weather.
