why so tight?

Running errands the other day when I realize my L/F caliper has seized up. No problem. Order the caliper, get it the next day. Get out all the tools I will need, jack it up, block it etc etc. Bottom line: had to use 3/4"drive breaker bar with a pipe extension for leverage to break the lugs! The 18" vintage snap-on breaker bar was flexing!! Had it to the local shop for inspection last month.. Why must they make these so damn tight?????

They torque them to the required amount to withstand the heat and vibration without loosening.
