20"s to 17"s
 
O.K. wheel/tire gurus,
I am getting my stock 20"s and Pirellis off as soon as i can make up my mind. I need a little help/advice from those who have already done this.
I really like the Pro Comp 1089, 17x9s. (-6mm BS) with either 315/70/17 BFG AT/KO or Goodyear DuraTracs. I like the taller tire sidewall, not the bling look of the big 20" wheels.
I have a AS 2" level on it, I am concerned about clearance and the dang TPMS stuff. If there won't be any clearance problems can I get away without the TPMS, or is it necessary?

I have pretty well confused the crap out of myself researching on here.
My truck is an '08, 4x4 Lariat SCrew, 5.4L, 3.73s, Edge canned tunes...

I can't help you with the clearance issue, but your TPMS sensors can just transfer into your new wheels if you have the adjustable band.. If not you can buy a new cradle for $9, the band for $14..

You should be able to fit both tires just fine, with a little rubbing at full crank. You may have to trim the front valance a little bit, but thats all. The BFGs have a better chance of fitting well since they have a less aggressive tread

Those tires are pretty much a 35x12.50, so with the low offset of those wheels, you will most likely get some rubbing like ak cowboy said at full lock, but I don't think it will be too bad.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I got my BS and offset switched up on my original post I think. The ProComps I was looking at are 4.75" BS. If I am understanding PawPaw correctly, the tire size I want will rub pretty bad. If I stay with a 17x9 wheel with a 5.5" BS, what will that do? I assume the tire will stick outside the wheel well further than the 4.75" BS wheel?

The wheel with the 5.5 inch BS will be tucked in 3/4 of an inch more then the 4.75 BS wheel. The assy. will stick out 1 1/2 inches more then stock and may still rub. I found the 8 inch wheel with the 5.5 BS which stick's out only 1/2 inch more then stock work's best with 35x12.5 tires. A lot of times stock wheel's work better then aftermarket wheel's too. Trying to get 35's to fit is a hit or miss deal anyway so it may be best to run 34's sometimes. I had 295x70x17 Toyo MT's on my truck when I sold it and they were a better fit on either of those wheel's then the larger tires were. You may be able to fit 35's after hammering and trimming but you may not end up liking the way the truck drives later anyway with loss of performance and mileage.

I like those wheels PawPaw. I've changed my mind on the wheels I am looking at. I decided on the Mickey Thompson Classics, 17x9 with 5.5" BS. You think that will let m still go with the 315/70s?

What about the TPMS stuff? I've been hearing about aftermarket sensors, good and bad reviews on them. I know the band type are a PITA it sounds like, some are having good luck with the new style that mounts at the valve stem. What have you had success with?

The band style TPMS sensors aren't bad. The OE bands are not re-usable, so you'll need the new ones and cradles to hold the sensors. The replacement ones are just an oversized worm clamp, like a giant hose clamp.

I've used many of them at my shop on replacement wheels and a couple aftermarket wheels.

You just want to make sure the sensor itself is located 180, directly opposite the valve stem, just how they come from the factory, or else you'll have balancing issues.

The MT 17x9 with 5.5 BS will be 1 1/2 inches more then stock due to the rim width and still may cause some rubbing when turning. You probably can make them fit with some trimming and hammering if you want to try for the 315's. My '04 didn't have the TPMS and my '11 has the one with the stock Ford wheel's.

OK, thanks for your patience PawPaw. I guess I should have started out with addressing my question a bit differently...
I have a 2" AS level on my '08 F-150 Lariat 4X4 Screw... I want to get rid of the 20"s on it, and get 17" (or maybe even 18") wheels. I have been looking at classic wheel designs like MT Classics and Pro Comp 1069s etc., Looking at 8 or 9 wide for a 34" tire... (Here is the tricky part) What wheel dimensions do I need to keep from rubbing?
I know the 2" AS level is actually a 2.5", and I'm pretty stuck on BFG ATs or Goodyear Duratracs. I certainly don't want any rubbing though, so... WTH? My truck is Dark Blue pearl with the Adobe Gold trim, so I really don't want to go with black wheels.... I am open to suggestions. The good thing is I am not in a huge rush, I still have quite a bit of life left on these Pirellis.

17x9 with 5 or 5.5 inches of BS to run 34x11.5 or 12's. 18x8.5 or 9 with 5.5 or 5.75 inches of BS to run 34x11.5 or 12's. These wheel's should clear 34's easily. Lot's of time to do your homework!
