True it isnt recomended to use stock width wheels with a tire that wide but as long as you dont corner like a sports car and have the air pressure at a reasonable level you can get some even wear and long lasting life. I have 40,000 miles on mine with a decent amount left and have a heavy right foot.

I just try to base my statements off my knowledge I've gained from 5+ years working for Goodyear, and recently really getting into upsizing and custom fitments for trucks of all sorts thru work with some clients of ours wanting to upsize tires and put custom wheels on their fleet, as well as regular customers wanting to go custom.

I have aftermarket 17x8.5 inch wheels with 265/70R17 tires on my 2WD XL w/ rear end dropped 2 inches to level it.
I also know for a fact you can fit 275/60R20's, which are 33 inches tall on a 2WD XL with the rear dropped 2 inches to level. Did this on a truck at work that belongs to Extang Tonneau Covers. They have 20x9 wheels on it. I think they stick out too far with the 9 inch wide wheels. I wouldn't go wider than 8.5 inches wide.

315/70r17
I'm rocking BFGoodrich All-Terrain 315/70R17's on my truck and wish I could go bigger.... no issues for several years now and it's getting time to replace them.
I did buy them used from Craigslist, but they had a lot of tread left. When I'm making a really tight slow turn (like in a parking lot), I can feel a slight rubbing on the inside, but other than that no issues.

They were on RBP wheels. They stuck out like crazy cuz they got the offset not quite right. They'll fit on stock 20 inch wheels. They're the same width as OE 20 inch tires on the F150's that come with 20's. Just a higher aspect ratio, which gives the increase in height.

18'' Wheels and stock tires........
Just bought 2012 F150 Screw XLT but before I put my DP on it, the dealer had to agree to replacing the 17'' with 18'' and he did. I am awaiting the tires and wheels to come in. I just think that a truck that size with the clearance, looks rediculous with 17''.

Try this:
2wd 265/70r17 non leveled
2wd 285/75r17---315/70r17 leveled (my opinion at least 2.5" level)
4wd 285/70r17 non leveled
4wd 285/75r17---295/75r17---315/70r17--- leveled (same as above) looks better than 2wd
Obviously all these are on 17" rims based on XL stock rims
