Confused about 33's
 

I put a 2" autospring leveling kit on my 2004 FX4 a few weeks ago. I have the stock Ford 20" rims and the stock Pirelli tires. I want to put 33's on my truck when I replace the tires.

Now, I want my tires to be wider, but I'm really wanting height. So, I naturally think upgrading from 275/55/20 to 285/65/20 or something like that. But I see several people here claiming that a 305/50 is also a 33. To me, this looks like a shorter, wider tire. I don't want my truck to be shorter.

Inform me. Like I said, I want bigger tires on my stock 20's. I don't want any rubbing at all and I have a 2" Autospring leveling kit.

then you want a 305/55/20 its a 12x33.2-20

I'm assuming you have an FX4 4x4? You can fit a 285/65/20. You can also use this site to compare tire sizes.

Are you saying that a 305/55/20 is a taller tire? The tires I have now are 55's.

I do have an FX4.

The "55" is just one variable in the equation.

Here is the formula to figure out tire diameter:

The section width is the first number, the aspect ratio is the second number (will be a percentage), and the rim diameter is the third. The section width is also the width of the tire in millimeters. To get the width in inches divide the first number by 25.4.

Right, a 305/55-20 is basically a 33x12.50 while a 305/50-20 is essentially a 32x12.50.

I not the brightest bulb so I always use the tire calculator but can you plug in a tire size in your equation as an example.

For a 305/55/20:

(305 x 0.55 x 2)
--------------------- + 20 = 33.2 This is the diameter.
25.4





305
----- = 12 This is the width.
25.4

You mean 12 and not 12.5, right? 315s are closer to 12.5.

Go with a 295/60/20 from Nitto. I think this size is the best of both worlds. Fills the wheel well, yet narrow enough to not rub. I'm surprise more people don't go with this tire. If I had to do it again, I'd switch to these from my 305/55 tires.

Why? Are you getting some rub? Or would you just rather have taller tires?

No rubbing, I just like the taller tires. The 305's look huge when they're not on the truck. As soon as they have weight put on them, they look a lot smaller. I wish I'd have gone for the larger ones for sure. I do love the looks of my Zeon's though.

I put the 295/60/20 on my truck,and love them. They rub a little, but that could be from the offset on my wheels.
